The authorized documentary
on the life and music of
JILL
SOBULE
Jill Sobule has been called a “songwriter’s songwriter” and celebrated for her ground-breaking, genre-defying music and fearless social activism. She has often been compared to such female singer-songwriters of the ‘90’s as Tracy Chapman and Sarah McLachlan but always felt more at home among her male counterparts like Tom Morello, Billy Bragg and John Doe of X. She could make you laugh and break your heart. She could also shred (as a young girl she wanted to be Jimi Hendrix).
Tragically, Jill passed away in a house fire in Minneapolis on May 1 at the age of 66.
JILL SOBULE: SHE’S GONNA SING! YOU’RE GONNA LISTEN! (working title*) is a biographical musical documentary produced and directed by Tom Ropelewski which offers an intimate view of Jill’s life and music. Made with Jill’s participation, along with family, friends and musical colleagues, it offers a behind-the-scenes look at Jill on tour across the country and her creative process while making her last album, the Original Cast Recording of F*ck 7th Grade, her autobiographical musical performed at The Wild Project in New York City in 2024.

*Longtime fans may recognize this title from an audio sample of Ralph Kramden (Jackie Gleason) of The Honeymooners that Jill used to open the song “Margaret” on her Pink Pearl album.
“Jill Sobule can claim her place among the stellar New York singer-songwriter of the last decade. Topical , funny and more than a little poignant… grown up music for an adolescent age.”
- JON PARELES, New York Times
