is a new music documentary produced and directed by award-winning filmmaker Tom Ropelewski which offers an intimate view of the late singer-songwriter’s life and music. Made with Jill’s participation before her tragic passing, it offers a behind-the-scenes look at the beloved Denver-born performer on tour across the country and recording her final album, the Original Cast Recording of F*ck 7th Grade, her autobiographical musical produced at The Wild Project in New York City in 2024.

Jill Sobule has been called a “songwriter’s songwriter” and celebrated for her ground-breaking, genre-defying music and fearless social activism. She has often been compared to such female artists as Tracy Chapman and Sarah McLachlan but always felt more at home among her outlaw male counterparts like Tom Morello, Billy Bragg and John Doe of X.  She could make you laugh and break your heart.  She could also shred (as a young girl she wanted to be Jimi Hendrix).

Tragically, Jill passed away in a house fire in Minneapolis on May 1, 2025 at the age of 66.

JILL SOBULE: Underdog Victorious features interviews with Jill’s friends, family, and musical collaborators including Nini Camps (Antigone Rising), actor/comedian Margaret Cho, John Doe (X), Kay Hanley (Letters to Cleo), Kristin Ellis-Henderson (Antigone Rising), jazz great Bill Frisell, author and music critic David Hajdu, singer-songwriter Michelle Lewis, comedian and talk show host Stephanie Miller, Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine/Audioslave) and musician/producer Julie Wolf.

“Jill Sobule can claim her place among the stellar New York singer-songwriter of the last decade. Topical, funny and more than a little poignant… grown up music for an adolescent age.”
